Gerald Joel Duncan
Gerald Joel Jerry Duncan, age 68, of Bear, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, pop pop, uncle, and friend.
Born in Woodbury, NJ, on September 30, 1942, the son of a Methodist minister, Jerry lived in New Jersey and Pennsylvania with the exception of his military service before moving to Bear in 1996.
Jerry graduated from Camden High School in Camden, NJ, in 1964. He then served in the United States Coast Guard spending one year on Attu in the Aleutian Island chain off of Alaska.
He was employed for over 30 years with Bell Telephone and worked in the computer field for CSC (Computer Science Corporation) before retiring six years ago.
Jerry was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Newark, DE, where he was a member of the choir. He was also a member of the Glasgow Lions Club, the Bridgeton Masonic Temple, and the Grand Lodge in Collingswood, NJ.
He enjoyed many hobbies, especially making beautiful stained glass lamps that are enjoyed by family and friends. His season tickets to the University of Delaware Blue Hens football games and tailgating with his friends were looked forward to each season.
Jerry was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, George and Louise Duncan, and his parents, The Rev. Joel and Elinor Duncan. Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Nancy (Cardwell) Duncan; daughter, Catherine D. Winterkorn (Steven) of Walkersville, MD; son, Theodore A. Duncan of Shamong, NJ; granddaughter, Arianna Elizabeth Winterkorn of Walkersville, MD; sister-in-law, Lois Ewen of Milmay, NJ; and niece, Tiffany E. Magolda (Nicholas) of Milmay, NJ.
A memorial service in Jerrys honor will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, May 28th, at the Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19702. He will be interred at the Woodruff Methodist Cemetery in Woodruff, NJ, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salem United Methodist Church at the above address.
