Harry E. Lewis, Sr.

Born June 16, 1926

Harry E. Lewis, Sr., age 89, of Middletown, Delaware, and formerly of New Castle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on July 17, 2015, at the Seasons Hospice Unit at Christiana Hospital in Newark.

Harry was born in Edison, NJ, on June 16, 1926, a son of the late Frederick J. Lewis, Sr. and Lillian Hearne Lewis. He had worked as a lineman at the General Motors Boxwood Road Plant, retiring in 1977 after 30 years of dedicated service. Harry proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Howard J. Weston Senior Center in Manor Park for many years, and enjoyed camping and fishing.

Harry would talk to anyone and had a smile that would light up the world. He was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. His happiest times were spent in the company of his children and grandchildren, especially during family beach vacations at Shawn’s Hideaway in Lewes.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth M. Woerner Lewis, who died in 2012. Harry is survived by his children, Margaret M. Eckrich (George) of Newark, Harry E. Lewis, Jr. (Carol) of Middletown, Frederick J. Lewis III (Joyce) of Elkton, MD, Sherry L. Akin (Michael) of Middletown, and Elizabeth M. Noel (Todd) of Dover; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Blvd., New Castle, DE, at 11am on Wednesday, July 22, 2015. A visitation for family and friends will be held that morning from 9:30am until 10:30am at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Highway, New Castle.
Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19805.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Charities 2601 W. 4th Street, Wilmington, DE 19805.
