Mr. Harry L. Grantland, Jr. (Chip), age 61, of Middletown, DE, formerly of New Castle, died on Monday, October 18, 2010, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Born in Wilmington on April 26, 1949, Mr. Grantland was the son of the late Harry L. Grantland, Sr. and Myrtle Fahs Grantland. He was a graduate of William Penn High School and would go on to serve his country as a proud member of the Delaware National Guard for 41 years until his retirement, most of his career spent with the 262nd Maintenance Co. An avid and expert outdoorsman, Mr. Grantland greatly enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and boating. He will be remembered, most of all, as an honorable and compassionate man who dedicated his entire life to his family, his friends, and his country.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, June Borden Grantland; children, Kristen N. Krenzer (Joseph) of Clayton, Scott A. Newell (fiance, Lindsay R. Haugh) of Middletown, and Erin E. Grantland of Middletown; brother, Ronald Grantland (Carol) of Clayton; granddaughter, Sara M. Newell; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gail Hicks.

Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, October 23, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery on Port Penn Road.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1021 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806; or to the Delaware National Guard and Reserve Foundation, 1st Regiment Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 (to support the families of deployed Guardsmen).
