Harvey L. Garvine

December 31, 1934 - March 29, 2015

Harvey L. Garvine, age 80, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 29, 2015.

A lifelong Delawarean, Mr. Garvine was born in Wilmington on New Year’s Eve, 1934, and was a son of the late Elmer Garvine and Margaret Alberta (Stumpf) Garvine. He made his career as a millwright with the DuPont Company and retired after 37 ½ years of dedicated service.

Active in his community, Mr. Garvine was a longtime member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle. He would have celebrated his 47th year in April as a member of Unity Lodge No. 32 A.F. & A.M. in Newport and served as past Assistant Guardian of Job’s Daughters for Bethel No. 8 of St. John’s. In his leisure time, Mr. Garvine enjoyed woodworking and spent many hours hand-crafting furniture for his family. He treasured the many happy memories he and his family created while vacationing in Myrtle Beach together. He was described by his loved ones as having a heart of gold and was always happy to lend a hand to anyone. A proud grandfather and great grandfather, he adored spending time with his grandchildren and especially looked forward to attending their sporting events. He was the type of grandfather who celebrated the unique and special qualities in each of his grandchildren. Mr. Garvine will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, brother and dear friend to many and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Shirley June (Durnall) Garvine; daughters, Donna Hanlin (Allan), State Representative Pamela Thornburg-Bakerian (David) and Laurie Hurd (Michael); brother, James Garvine (Debra); sisters, Jean Powell, Evelyn Claveoux (Richard) and Judi Overstreet; 9 grandchildren, Kristopher, Kelli and Stacey Soja, Daniel, David, Brandon and Elizabeth Thornburg and Christopher and Joshua Hurd; and 2 great grandchildren, Shyann and Kristopher Soja, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, April 2, 2015, at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Asbury United Methodist Church, at the address listed above.
