Helen Brown Thompson, age 96, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015.

A native Delawarean, Mrs. Thompson was born in Newark on October 13, 1918, and was a daughter of the late Clifford Brown and Mary Elizabeth (Allen) Brown. She received her associate’s degree from Goldey Beacom College and would later accept a position as the executive secretary to the Dean of Agriculture at the University of Delaware, retiring after 25 years of dedicated service.

Known for her gentle, kind and compassionate nature, Mrs. Thompson went out of her way to help anyone in need and had a soft spot in her heart for animals, especially dogs. She was active in her community and worked for many years for the State of Delaware’s Election Committee. She was an excellent cook and looked forward to entertaining family and friends, especially during the holidays. In her leisure time, Mrs. Thompson enjoyed needlepoint and gardening. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother who will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter B. Thompson, sisters, Gladys Snavely, Frances Jones and Jane Birchenall and a grandson, Donald Scott Thompson. She is survived by her children, Joanne T. Manley (William) of Harbeson, DE, Walter B. Thompson, Jr. (Constance) of Hilton Head, SC, John O. Thompson (Linda) of Newark, DE and Barbara Dobrosielski of Newark, DE; sister, Elizabeth Crossan of Newark, DE; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Newark Cemetery, Newark, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, c/o Christiana Care, P.O. Box 1668, Wilmington, DE 19899 or to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, 1901 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.
