Helen Murray Fulghum

Born January 25, 1931

Helen Murray Fulghum, age 84, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and five children on Wednesday, July 1, 2015.

Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on January 25, 1931, Helen was the daughter of the late Harry MacQuigan Murray and Jessie Bell (Kennedy) Murray. Helen married Joe Fulghum, a celebrated baseball player for the Stellarton Albions after a summer romance in 1951 that continued for 64 years. They moved from Nova Scotia to start their married life in Raleigh, North Carolina. Helen was the anchor of her family whose love for her husband and her children was evident in how well she cared for and took pride in each of them. After raising her children, Helen found a new way to care for others as the office administrative assistant for the Head Start Program at R. Elizabeth Maclary Elementary in the Christina School District and New Castle County Building Department.

She was a longtime member of Newark United Methodist Church, a passionate fitness role model at Kirkwood Fitness Club and an avid reader of her daily devotionals. In her leisure time, Helen enjoyed watching baseball games with Joe, writing to family and friends on her computer and playing daily trivia on-line. Her happiest times were spent sharing meals and vacations at the beach with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Murray and her sister, Rae Carswell. Helen is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Francis (Joe) Marion Fulghum; her 5 children, Thurma Elizabeth Fulghum DeLoach (William) of Chesterfield, MO, Francis Marion Fulghum, Jr. (Patti) of Sammamish, WA, Lynn Fulghum Srivastava (Saurabh) of Hockessin, DE, James Scott Fulghum (Maureen) of Elkton, MD and David Lee Fulghum of Newark, DE; brother, Ivan Murray (Betty) of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia; grandchildren, Lauren, Braden, Garry, Blake, Nicole, Kyle, Jessica, Ryan and Shannon; and great grandchildren, Harper, Chloe and Jack.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday evening, July 6, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A second visitation will be held from 10 am until 10:30 am on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2015 at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will follow at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.
