“Herb”

September 9, 1935 – July 2, 2016

Herbert E. Andersen, Jr., age 80, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 2, 2016.

Born in Trenton, NJ on September 9, 1935, Herb was the son of the late Herbert E. Andersen, Sr. and Ann Margaret (Fink) Andersen.  A graduate of Archmere Academy, he was a standout student athlete who excelled at all sports.  Herb made his career as an insurance agent with State Farm, serving area residents for over 52 years.

Active in his community, he volunteered his time as a youth baseball coach with the Babe Ruth Baseball League and the Wilmington Little League for many years.  Herb was a champion tennis player and enjoyed the many hours he spent at the Rodney Street courts in his youth.  In his leisure time, he looked forward to a good round of golf with friends.  Herb was a 45 year member of the Cavaliers Country Club where he made many happy memories.  He was also an avid poker player and enjoyed horse racing at Delaware Park.  A man of strong faith, he was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. John the Beloved Church.  Above all else, Herb adored spending time with his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family.  He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by his twin sister, Kathleen Dunkelburger and his great niece, Sarah.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Ingrid R. Andersen; children, Deborah A. Aiken (George) of Newark, DE, Herbert E. Andersen III (Donna) of New Castle, DE, Michael D. Andersen of Newark, DE, Elizabeth A. Reel (Daniel) of Bear, DE and Paulina Lijivetzky of Chile, South America; grandchildren, Jaime, Diane, Daniel, Molly, Nicole, Tara, Sophia, Jonathan and Justin; great grandchildren, Matthew, Isabella, Maria, Chance and Mason; niece, Ann Fisher; and great niece, Emily.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Saturday morning, July 9, 2016, at St. John the Beloved R.C. Church, 907 Milltown Road, Sherwood Park, Wilmington, DE, where a visitation will be held from 9 am until 11 am.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Herb’s memory may be made to A Door of Hope, 3407 Lancaster Pike, Wilmington, DE 19805 or to the Sunday Breakfast Mission P.O. Box 352 Wilmington, DE 19899.

We are so deeply saddened to learn of Herb’s passing. We quickly became good golf friends at Cavaliers where he was an avid supporter and golfer. He always had a kind thing to say and was such a positive influence on us. Our thoughts and prayers go to all of his family. He will be sorely missed.
