Howard J. O’Connor, age 92, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Sunday, January 4, 2015.

Born in New York, NY on August 17, 1922, Mr. O’Connor was the son of the late Stephen O’Connor and Mary Howard O’Connor. He bravely served his country as a member of the US Navy during WWII. A devout Catholic, Mr. O’Connor was ordained as a permanent deacon by the Diocese of Wilmington and was a longtime and active parishioner at Holy Family Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 1 brother and 2 sisters. Mr. O’Connor is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Madeline A. (DiGioacchino) O’Connor; daughters, Maura O’Connor and Aminta O’Connor (Kenneth Nichols); 1 granddaughter, Katie Whitestone; 1 great granddaughter, Chloe Whitestone; and many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Friday morning, January 9, 2015, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Entombment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE 19713 or to the Michael G. Schwartz Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 5972, Wilmington, DE 19808.

  • My condolences to Madeline and his many friends. He has been a special individual in my life and in the lives of many. My prayers for the repose of Howard’s soul and his family in this time of grief.

  • Mrs O’Connor, I am so very sorry to hear about Howard’s passing. Although the last few months have been very difficult, I know how much he valued the time he was able to spend with you. The level of care you were able to give him was truly remarkable. I just hope you know what a compassionate and caring woman you are and how much sunshine you brought to his days. “Lovey” will be in all our heart always, may he reunite with his mother and eternally rest in peace.
