Irene B. Warren
Irene B. Warren, 80, of Newark, DE, died peacefully surrounded by family at Paoli Hospital, PA, on Monday July 5, 2010, of complications following a stroke.
Irene was born in Chicago, IL on Sept. 29, 1929 to Joseph and Mary (McKendry) Belous. She spent her childhood in Chicago, and after graduating as class valedictorian from South Shore High School moved to Los Angeles. There she earned a BA and a MA from UCLA, and engaged in a remarkable variety of pursuits including modeling and professional singing. In Los Angeles she met fellow UCLA student Robert Warren; they were married in 1959. They moved to Seattle, WA where Bob taught at the University of Washington. Irene completed her Ph.D. in Voice Science at the University of Washington, while raising two children and the first of many Borzoi dogs. After a brief stop in Palos Verdes, CA, the family settled in Newark, DE in 1975.
At the start of her career, Irene taught at California State University Long Beach and the University of Delaware. Subsequently, she joined the Christina School District as a speech pathologist in its autistic program. This was followed by decades of service in a number of schools in the District helping an inestimable number of children.
In the latter part of her career, much of her work and commitment was focused at Bancroft Elementary in Wilmington. At the time of her death, she was secretary-treasurer for the Delaware Speech-Language and Hearing Association (DSHA). She especially contributed to the profession as a member of its executive board and secretary-treasurer since the 1980s.
Irene will be remembered for her love of animals and always having Borzois as faithful friends, her incomparable cooking skills, her continually blooming greenhouse garden, her devotion to aquacizing, and her sharp wit, which she used unsparingly to the end. The house on Dallam Road was like a 5 star restaurant, benefitting friends, family, and colleagues.
Irene is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert, at home, daughter Stacy Warren (Dan Israel) of Spokane, WA, son Colin Warren (Virginia Parks) of Chicago, IL, step-daughter Miranda Sacharin (Ken) of New York City, and step-son Jeffrey Warren (Linda) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by her sister Catherine Armstrong and niece Allison Fanara of Madison, WI, sister-in-law Bea Belous of Pensacola, FL, brother Philip Belous (Carol), and brother-in-law Jim Yocum (Kathy) of Eugene, OR. Irene enjoyed her grandchildren Claire and Robin Israel, Ian Parks, Emily Sacharin, and Elad, Nathaniel, Joe, and Penina Warren, grandnephew Giovanni and grandniece Katerina Fanara, and numerous cousins, grand cousins, grand nieces, nephews, and other relatives and a wide network of friends, neighbors, and colleagues too extensive to list. She was predeceased by her brother Russell Belous and nephew Mark Belous.
The family thanks the staff at Paoli Hospital, and especially nurses Cindy and Rob, for the compassionate care they gave Irene and the support they extended to her family in her final days.
