Mr. Irving Irv Spiro, age 88, of Aventura, FL, and Pennsville, NJ, passed away peacefully at home in Pennsville surrounded by loving family on Monday, November 1, 2010.
Born on October 29, 1922 in New York City, son of Albert and Gussie Spiro, and brother of Howard, Irv was a graduate of Long Beach High School and City College of NYC where he earned his bachelors degree in business and subsequently passed his CPA exam. Irv served his country by enlisting in the US Army Air Corps, training as a Bombardier Navigator during World War II. He survived numerous dangerous flying missions over Germany and completed his Air Corps service by guiding a squadron of A26 Douglas Invaders on a first-of-its kind non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean from France to Brazil.
After the war, Irv met his future wife, Loida, in front of the famous Rascal House restaurant on Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. They married and were blessed with two children, Grace Elizabeth and Alan Jeffrey. Irv was also blessed with two children, Susan Frances Spiro and Judi Weislo, from a first marriage.
After Irv and Loida married they moved to Delaware and Irv became involved in real estate development. During Irvs initial development project–the building of the expansive Brookside neighborhood in Newark, DE–Irv met his future business partner, Arnold Mattei, Sr. Irv and his partner went on to develop the Society Hill Apartments in Claymont, DE, the New Amstel Apartments, the Landings Apartments in Pleasantville NJ, the Quality Inn Skyways, Kent Manor Motel & Inn, the Bowlerama Entertainment Center and Continental Cafe, along with other commercial projects.
Irv was a loving, devoted family man who had a no-nonsense way of expressing himself. He was a great judge of character and possessed an exceptionally sharp insight and business intellect, and was an astute observer of life in general.
A good and generous friend to many Irv was always willing to help both friends and strangers when asked. Irv so loved and enjoyed his family of in-laws from England and greatly enjoyed all the occasions he spent visiting the UK.
Irv is survived by his loving, devoted wife Loida, daughters Susan, Judi, and Grace, son Alan, daughter in-law Victoria, his nieces, Marsha and Ellen Spiro, and grandchildren, Justin, Benjamin John Ruben, and Alana Jade. Irving, a great man who experienced a life very well lived, will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
