“Jim”

James J. “Jim” Balbach, age 83, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2014.

A native Delawarean, Jim was born in Wilmington on Valentine’s Day, 1931 and was a son of the late Joseph L. Balbach and Lena Eckrich Balbach. He honorably served his country for 39 years as a career member of the Army National Guard, retiring in 1986 at the rank of Colonel.

A devout Catholic, Jim was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and especially enjoyed cheering on the Eagles each season. In his leisure time, Jim spent many happy hours crabbing and clamming, enjoyed cooking and traveling, and he adored attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend and will be dearly missed by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita Balbach, a son, John J. Balbach, a brother, Joseph Balbach and a sister, Margaret Braune. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Deborah A. Griffith Balbach; children, James Balbach (Jean) of Walkersville, MD, Deborah Truselo (Pat) of New Castle, Carol McKinney (Mike) of Elkton, MD, Diane Poczynek (Ken) of Pittsburgh, PA, Leonard Balbach (Dena) of Liberty, NC, David Balbach of Newark, Christine Benson of St. Georges and Scott Benson (Heather) of New Castle; sisters, Frances Balbach of Wilmington, Sister Helena J. Balbach and Sister Trinita Balbach both of Aston, PA; 29 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday evening, December 22, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Tuesday morning, December 23, 2014, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be made to the Lt. J. Allison O’Daniel VFW Post 475, 100 Veterans Lane, Newark, DE 19711.

    So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Balbach, who I affectionately called “Uncle Jim.” He was a patient of mine while a resident at Arbors nursing facility, and quickly became one of my favorites. What a sweet man. I wish to extend my condolences to his family during this difficult time, and it is my hope that you may find peace from the ” God of all comfort.” – 2 Corinthians 1:3.
