James J. Longo
Mr. James J. Longo, age 74, of Wilmington, DE, died on Monday, March 14, 2011, at his home after a long illness.
Jim was born in Wilmington on August 20, 1936, son of the late Louis R. Longo and Louise A. Greggo Longo. A 1954 graduate of Wilmington High School, he starred on the varsity football and track teams. He earned his associates degree from Goldey-Beacom College, where he also played basketball. He later attended the McCarrie School of Dentistry. As a young man, he proudly served his country in the US Army National Guard and the US Army Reserve.
Jim was the founder of Diversified Chemical Products (DCP), a specialty medical supply firm in Wilmington, and held patents that are still sold internationally. Among his professional affiliations, he was a member and former president of the Delaware Dental Laboratory Association. Upon his retirement in 2001, Jim passed DCPs leadership to his sons, Jim Jr. and David.
In his leisure hours, Jim greatly enjoyed goose and duck hunting, fishing, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elizabeth Betty Angeline Longo; sons, James J. Longo, Jr. (Christina) of Landenberg, PA, and David M. Longo of Wilmington; brother, Dr. Louis A. Longo of Wilmington; sister, Joanne M. Mayer (Frank Jr.) of Newark; grandsons, Reid Longo and Matthew Longo; and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the nurses and staff of DaVita Dialysis of Riverside Complex for their many kindnesses to Jim during his illness.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Saturday, March 19th, at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Ninth & DuPont Streets, Wilmington, where visitation will begin at 9 am. Entombment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
