James J. Walker, Sr.

Born August 15, 1930

James J. Walker, Sr., age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home, while surrounded by his family, on Sunday, November 27, 2016.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on August 15, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles and Helen E. (Krumenacker) Walker. James proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy. A 35 year employee of the Delaware City Refinery, he made his career as a Supervisor.

James was a longtime parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church in Newark and a 2nd degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Active in his community, he gave of his time as a youth Little League coach and was a past member and dancer of the Delaware Saengerbund. James was an avid traveler who made pilgrimages to various holy places throughout the world with his wife, Elizabeth. In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting, gardening and was well known for his ability to build and repair anything and everything. James adored spending time with his loved ones and especially looked forward to family beach vacations. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be long remembered for his love of life and his devotion to his family and pets.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sons, James J. Walker, Jr. and Erik J. Walker. He is survived by wife of 64 years, Elizabeth M. (Berghof) Walker; children, Janice Reuling (Richard)of Newark, Colleen Lenoir (Jack) of Middletown, Tamara Priestley (Michael) of Rehoboth Beach, Brian Walker of Newark and Shawn Walker of Newark; sister, Helen Walker (Joseph); brothers, Daniel Walker (Judy) of Williamstown, NJ and Roger Walker (Susan) of Newark; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 pm until 2 pm on Thursday afternoon, December 1, 2016 at Holy Family R.C. Church, East Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 pm. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be sent to Holy Family R.C. Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE 19713.
