Jane (Asay) Schaeffer, age 87, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on February 3, 1927, Jane was the daughter of the late Alfred J. Montgomery and Sarah Margaret Denney Montgomery. Jane made her career as a bookkeeper and secretary for many years.

As a 60 year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows she was active with Florence H. Bailey Rebekah Lodge No. 13 and served as Past President of the Rebekah Assembly of Delaware, Past Chief Matriarch of Mutual L.E.A. No. 1, Past Lady President of Delaware L.A.P.M. No. 1 and was also a member of Eden Lodge No. 34 and Christine Encampment No. 12.

Jane loved traveling and had visited all 50 states and 8 countries over the years. In her leisure time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafting and completing crossword puzzles. A devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother she adored spending time with her beloved family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren and her faithful feline companion, Izzy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John L. Asay, Jr. who died in 1969 and her second husband, Ray C. Schaeffer who died in 2005, a daughter, Joni Davis and a granddaughter, Carolyn Davis. Jane is survived by her daughters, Debbie Farnan (Joe), Karen Branda (Rick), Lynn Stiteler (Dan), Robin Smith and Allison Cuminale (Paul); son-in-law, Dwight Davis; 11 grandchildren, Jodi Harper (Shawn), John Farnan, Eric Branda (Vania Grigorova), Christine Locandro (Joe), Angela Branda, Stephen Toth (Christina), Jennnifer Sheppard, William Davis (Hannah), Kevin Davis, Joseph Cuminale (Amanda), and Christine Dignan (Kyle); and 11 great grandchildren, Christopher and Katharine Harper, Olivia and Joseph Locandro, Sienna and Oliver Toth, Margaret and Owen Sheppard, Garrett and Lucy Cuminale and Makenzie Dignan.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12 Noon until 2 pm on Sunday afternoon, November 16, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a Rebekah service will be held at 1 pm. A second visitation for family and friends will be held from 1 pm until 2 pm on Monday afternoon, November 17, 2014 at the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will follow at 2 pm. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, c/o 1 S. Lunenburg Drive, New Castle, DE 19720. Kindly note Eye Care Research in the memo line.

  • Hi folks —

    Just wanted to let you know you’ve all been in my thoughts and prayers. If I recall, the last time I saw Jane was at an open house in Fremont. I was talking with someone in the living room, and she burst into the room saying “I know that voice!”

    With Jane as the root of the family tree, I never had to wonder why the leaves and twigs were so pleasant… 🙂
