Janice C. Palagruto
Mrs. Janice C. Palagruto, age 67, of Elkton, MD, died on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.
Born in Robbins, NC, on September 11, 1943, Janice was the daughter of the late June Atlas Cockman and Mary Dunlap Cockman. She spent her entire childhood and early college years in North Carolina before marrying and moving north to Delaware, Virginia and later to Maryland.
Janice suffered from many debilitating physical problems throughout her life which resulted in frequent hospitalizations. Despite this, she fought at every turn to overcome those obstacles and did not allow them to stop her from living a life full of many wonderful moments that touched all those who came into contact with her.
A devout Catholic, Janice was a longtime member of St. Johns-Holy Angels parish, where she served as a Eucharist Minister.
Janices professional career took many forms. Upon getting married, she taught second grade at Holy Rosary in Claymont, Delaware. After a detour to raise her two sons, her passions were modeling, later image consulting and she obtained her certification as a licensed esthetician from the Maryland State Board of Cosmetologists. Her career continued as she worked as an independent contractor for cosmetic companies at Macys. Finally, for 20 years she was employed in the financial services field as the Office Manager for her familys firm, Palagruto Enterprises, Inc.
From her earliest days, Janice enjoyed shopping at Macys and elsewhere. One of her true passions was gardening and working outside. She was a great listener, always willing to lend a kind, attentive and empathetic ear to both friends and family. Janice genuinely loved spending time with her family and that love took many forms. Many a summer day was spent on the beach with her sons, their wives and children, or on the boat with her husband Domenic. It did not matter that they rarely caught anything on their fishing trips. Each year Janice looked forward to the four weeks she and Domenic would spend together in Florida. But more than anything, she loved spending time with and talking to her grandchildren.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Domenic A. Palagruto; sons, Domenic A. Palagruto II, D.O. (Karen, M.D.) of Oak Island, NC, and David A. Palagruto (Julie) of Elkton, MD; siblings, Lorna Clack, Ph.D. of Carthage, NC, Elizabeth Thomas of Carthage, NC, Daniel A. Cockman, Ph.D. of Climax, NC, and Dianah Bradshaw, Ph.D. of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren, Rosanna Monterosso, Vincent Monterosso, Frank Monterosso, Domenique Palagruto, Jack Palagruto, and Cameron Palagruto; and great grandson, Devin Monterosso.
