Jean M. Smiga
Mrs. Jean M. Smiga, age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, November 14, 2011, at Heartland Hospice House.
Mrs. Smiga was born in Bayonne, NJ, on August 14, 1922, daughter of the late Mary and Stanley Barbour. She was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima parish.
A talented homemaker throughout her life, Mrs. Smiga was a truly gifted seamstress who handcrafted many beautiful items as gifts for family and friends. She was frequently admired for the beautiful fit and design of the clothing she so carefully made.
Mrs. Smiga dedicated her life to her beloved family and will be sadly missed by the many people who loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 50 years, Joseph T. Smiga; daughter, Jean M. Reider; brothers, Edward, Steve, and Alexander Barbour; and sister, Helen Zindarski. She is survived by her sons, Thomas J. Smiga (Sharon) and Robert J. Smiga (Christine) of New Castle; brother, John Barbour of Barnegat, NJ; grandchildren, John Reider, Christopher, Matthew, Cynthia, Gregory, and Robert Smiga, and Robert Stellfox; nine great grandchildren; and former daughter-in-law, Victoria Stellfox.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Friday, November 18, 2011, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mrs. Smiga may be made to Heartland Hospice House, 5661 Ochletree Lane, Wilmington, DE 19808.
