Jean Winters Pfeffer

Died: 4/5/2011

Mrs. Jean Winters Pfeffer, age 89, a resident of Newark, DE, since 1960, passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2011.

Mrs. Pfeffer was born in Hagerstown, MD, on November 28, 1921, daughter of the late Lauran A. Winters and Martha M. Hixon. A talented homemaker, Mrs. Pfeffer was also a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark and volunteered in a variety of community organizations and institutions including the Newark Free Library and local garden clubs.

Known for her adventurous spirit, Mrs. Pfeffer traveled widely throughout her life, taking birding trips to such faraway locales as the Galapagos Islands, New Zealand, Africa (twice), and Europe with her beloved husband, James. She participated in a number of interesting Elderhostel programs over the years as well. Her great personal bravery and strength of character also led her to take many boating trips and join a swim club even though she had never actually learned to swim! She also enjoyed golfing.

Mrs. Pfeffer delighted, most of all, in the company of her family and many friends. An admired and loving matriarch, she was pleased to host her familys holiday gatherings each winter and could also be found with many visitors in her home at any time of the year.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James F. Pfeffer, Jr., and daughters, Barbara Pfeffer Rosen and Lauri Pfeffer Schinn. She is survived by her daughter, Marti DeChene; brother, David L. Winters (Barbara); grandson, James DeChene (Elizabeth); great grandson, Grayden DeChene; three nieces and three nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 pm on Sunday, April 10th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Attn: Donor Services, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309 or to the Alzheimers Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
