Joann R. Knowles, age 75, of New Castle, DE passed away peacefully at home, while surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 5, 2015.

Born in Wilmington, DE on March 22, 1939, Joann was a daughter of the late William Joyce and Minnie (Schaffer) Joyce and a graduate of St. Elizabeth High School. She made her career as a press machine operator with Westvaco, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

She was an active member of Free Will Baptist Church in New Castle. An avid football fan, Joann enjoyed cheering on the San Francisco 49ers each season. She adored spending time with her family, visiting the beach, watching her favorite television shows and trips with family to Delaware Park. Joann was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and will be dearly missed by many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 15 siblings; a son, Joseph M. Knowles; son in law, Anthony Saragino; and a grandson, Michael Scalia, Jr. Joann is survived by husband of 58 years, Martin H. Knowles; children, Marty Knowles III (Catherine), Joyce Scalia (Michael), Donald A. Knowles (Annette), Sherry Saragino, Tracy Ferrell (William Noble); sister, Theresa Realey; 2 granddaughters whom she raised, Laura and Sara Ferrell; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday morning, March 11, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. and DuPont Rd., Wilmington, DE.
