John B. Callahan, Sr.

Born: 6/21/1931
Died: 2/8/2012

John B. Callahan, Sr., known fondly as “Jack,” age 80, of Smyrna, DE, formerly of New Castle, passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at his home.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Callahan was born in Wilmington on June 21, 1931, son of the late Marie and William Callahan. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. In civilian life, he made his career as a construction superintendent with Greggo and Ferrara. He later accepted a position as a highway inspector with the State of Delaware, where he retired.
Mr. Callahan was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed golfing, fishing, and, in earlier years, traveling with his wife. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband and father who took great pride in providing for his beloved family. His happiest times were spent in the company of his wife, children, and grandchildren, whom he adored.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rosemarie A. Pantuliano Callahan, to whom he was a devoted and dedicated husband for 60 years; children, Colleen Vavala (Michael) of Smyrna, Jackie Wilson (William) of Middletown, and John Callahan, Jr. (Ruth) of Newark; brothers, Robert Callahan (Sandra) and Ernie Callahan; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
A committal service will be held at 10 am on Monday, February 13, 2012, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Callahan may be made to the Bayhealth Foundation, 640 S. State Street, Dover, DE 19901. Mark donations for “Transition Center.”
