John David Raughley, Jr.

Born February 26, 1949

John David Raughley, Jr. , age 65, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

Born in Wilmington, DE on February 26, 1949, John was a son of the late John David Raughley, Sr. and Delores K.(Oberly) Raughley. He bravely served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.

John epitomized the word family. He was a devoted caregiver to his wife, Lorraine and adored bringing his family and friends together for gatherings, especially on Christmas Eve. A superb cook, John relished preparing delicious meals for his loved ones and was happy to share his recipes for his personal specialties which included his famous beer dogs, potato salad and his secrets for preparing hard shell crabs. Outgoing and charismatic, he had a smile for anyone he met, was always jovial and had the most contagious, hardy laugh. John was a man of many interests and in his leisure time spent many happy hours fishing and boating, which was truly his passion. He loved antiquing, setting up at flea markets and furniture refinishing. John was exceptionally creative and had a distinctive knack for ingenuity. He went out of his way to help anyone in need, whether he was offering his home as a place to stay or preparing meals for the homeless. He will be remembered as a man guided by his strong Lutheran faith who had the biggest of hearts. A loving and thoughtful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, John will be deeply missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Scott Raughley, Sr. John is survived by his loving wife, Lorraine S. (Gurczenski) Raughley; children, Polly Black, Katie Beaudet, John D. Raughley III, Wendy Wooters, Kevin Sczubelek and Dawn Sczubelek; sister, Lilly West; brother, Tom Raughley; and many grandchildren.
