John E. Barth
Born June 3, 1923
Father, grandfather, veteran, duPont retiree and golfer John E. Barth, age 92, of Wayland, MA and formerly of Newark, DE, is remembered in passing on December 12, 2015.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 3, 1923, John graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and attended Cooper Union on scholarship. He left school and volunteered for the Army Air Corps. Commissioned as a B-24 navigator, John flew 35 combat missions from a base in southern Italy from June 1944 to May 1945, bombing targets in Germany, Romania, Yugoslavia, France and Italy. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and left the service as a Captain. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1947 and worked for Sucony-Mobil until 1953 when he moved to Wilmington, DE. John worked at DuPont’s Louviers engineering building until his retirement in 1985.
He was a frequent golfer and loved nothing more than a good round on a perfect summer day. A former resident of Hilton Head, SC, Jack, as he was known to New York friends, then settled in Newark, DE with his second wife, Patricia, who precedes him in death. They enjoyed a life of world travel, dancing, a shared joy of big band music, cards and many friends. John was an active volunteer in various churches, Habitat for Humanity and at Hilton Head Hospital. John moved to an assisted living facility in Wayland, MA in early 2015. John’s first wife, Elsie, passed away in 1970.
He is survived by brother, Thomas Barth and his wife Ethel of Scotch Plains, NJ; sons, John Barth of St. Louis, MO and his partner Melody Walker and Douglas Barth of Sudbury, MA and his wife Lisa Barth; step daughter, Constance Farquhar and her husband Brian; step son, Stephen Ogden and his wife Barbara; and many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the care and attention John received from the staff at Traditions of Wayland where he spent his final year.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Monday morning, December 28, 2015 at St. John the Beloved R.C. Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment with military honors will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. I worked with John for several years at Louviers. He was not only a very good engineer to work with but he was a great person to be around. On Christmas Day I will light a candle at the University of Notre Dames’ “Grotto” in John’s memory.

To all of John’s children and grandchildren we are so very sorry to hear of the passing of John. He and Pat were very good friends and we loved and enjoyed being with them very much. Mike knew John from Louviers and I met both Pat and John on a trip to Spain. We became friends instantly and had many good years and now wonderful memories. We are so disappointed that we cannot attend the Mass for John on Monday but circumstances in our own life are preventing it. Please know that if we could we would certainly be there.
He was a good man.
