John G. Iffland
Mr. John G. Iffland, known fondly as Mr. Iff, age 84, of Newark, DE, and Ft. Myers, FL, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 12, 1928, John was the son of the late John G. Iffland and Leontine Bonnion Iffland. He graduated from Sharon Hill (PA) High School in 1947. Following graduation, he enlisted in the US Air Force, serving his country for four years and participating in the famed Berlin Airlift.
In civilian life, John was employed with the Interstate & Ocean Transport Company of Philadelphia, where he worked as a captain of a seagoing asphalt barge and as a chartering representative in the sales and marketing department. After his retirement in 1988, he worked as a school bus driver for the Sutton Bus & Truck Company for ten years. Upon leaving the company, John and his wife Diane purchased a condo in Ft. Myers, FL, and became snowbirds–dividing the year between Delaware and Florida. He enjoyed golf and was a member of both the Three Little Bakers and Deerfield Country Clubs. He was also a longtime ticket holder for University of Delaware Blue Hen football and a loyal fan of the Phillies and the Eagles.
John was a Master Mason and a member of Armstrong Lodge #26 in Newport, DE, and was a past president of the Independence Square Club of Philadelphia. He and Diane traveled extensively both home and abroad.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Diane K. Murray Iffland; children, Donald Iffland of Centerville, VA, Lee Raymond and husband Chris of Landenberg, PA, Judy Pajerowski of Tampa, FL, Eric Iffland and wife Robin of Arnold, MD, and John Iffland of Newark, DE; eleven grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, May 3, 2013, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 276 S. College Avenue at Park Place, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 1 pm.
