John G. Seador - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

John G. Seador

Born July 11, 1963

John G. Seador, age  50, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania on Friday, June 6th, 2014.

He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on July 11, 1963 to John L. and Maureen Seador. He was a graduate of Newark High School and attended the University of Delaware and Delaware Technical and Community College. John spent the last 29 years as an employee of Kenneth G. Lilly Fasteners where he started in the warehouse and worked his way up to Director of Purchasing.

John always enjoyed working on household projects, but he seemed to get the most satisfaction from helping others work on their projects. He was always a tinkerer, a woodworker and an admirer of great craftsmanship.

John was a Life Member of Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, active in local Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 56, participated in his son’s Newark American Little League team, his son’s and daughter’s Odyssey of the Mind team, and even Big Brothers when he was younger. He immersed himself into the fabric of Newark United Methodist Church, taking on any task, duty or chore that was offered to him “ he just could not say no.

Although John could always spare time for others, his greatest passion was spending time with his best friend and wife of 20 years, Debbie, and their two children, Selby and Noah. John took great joy in watching all aspects of his children’s growth and maturity. He never missed an opportunity to attend their chorus, band and orchestra concerts, plays, sports banquets and awards ceremonies, or any special event in which they may have been involved. He would bend time to make sure he was in attendance.

John was pre-deceased by his father John L. but is survived by his mother, Maureen; brothers Tom and his wife Carol of Nashville, TN; Dan and his wife Monica, sisters Kathi Weston and her husband Jay, and his twin sister Reenie Hitchens and her husband Karl, all of Newark. Additionally, John is survived by numerous aunts and uncles, along with nieces and nephews. He will be dearly missed by all.

His family would like to thank all of the medical staff in the cardiac ICU, cardiovascular center and the transplant team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for John’s extraordinary clinical care and the daily compassion with which they treated him and his family.

Services will be held at Newark United Methodist Church, 69 East Main Street in Newark, Delaware on Wednesday, June 11th. Visitation will be held at 1pm followed immediately by a short memorial service at 2pm and reception in Heritage Hall. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Boy Scouts of America, Del-Mar-Va Council, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 915, Wilmington, DE 19801 or to the Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, P.O. Box 148, Newark, DE 19715.

  • John and I go back to the sandpile. We spent hours playing with Matchbox cars and trucks either at his house or mine on Apple Rd. I married one of his best friends, the girl across the street from the Seadors, Melanie. I chased Reenie around too and slept over at John’s many Friday nights watching scary movies and staying up late in the den. I had a lot of growing up to do, but John always took the right path. His sister Kathi and his Mom had a great influence, though they probably don’t know, on my search for God and Catholicism as an adult; better late than never. I still have our fourth grade class picture, which includes John sitting in the front row with that grin. It’s been hanging in my machine shop since we moved to Idaho.
He will not be forgotten by Melanie or I as he set good examples of giving and selflessness since he was a kid trading Matchbox cars with me in his driveway.
    Godspeed Brother

  • John was my first cousin, our Moms were sisters. We grew up 3,000 miles apart so we only got to spend time together on a few visits. They were very memorable as I got to know his sense of humor and kindness. 25 years ago John came out to So Cal to visit and attend a wedding in the Bay Area. Our Moms sat in the back seat and I remember the wonderful conversation and laughs as we drove up highway 101. He was such a great guy and a true gentleman who always helped you out without being asked. John was single then, and I knew his future plans involved marriage and family. I still vividly remember thinking, his future wife is going to be truly blessed to have such a person of character. I know his family meant everything to him. Just looking at the photos of the four of them together, you could see the love and humor they shared together as a family. God’s blessings and prayers for all his family, especially Debbie, Selby, Noah, and my Aunt Maureen.

  • While Scott and John played matchbox, John and I would just hang out whenever we could….talk, drive to the beach with Bruce Springsteen blaring on the cassette tape, make wood crafts in his basement woodshop, hand him tools when working on his car in the driveway, late night swimming after working all night at Friendlys to get the sticky ice cream off of us, and many more memories. So many memories, but one of the most memorable is the time we both decided to stay up all night outside – just to see if we could stay awake, witness the sunrise, and to see if our parents even noticed we were not in our rooms sleeping. We didn’t go anywhere – just either in my yard or his yard or as far away as the dead end on our street; wandering through the hot summer night, throwing rocks, watching the stars, playing two square….anything to keep us awake. We both made it, but I’m sure our parents wondered why we slept a lot the next day. That night is an example of John always being there for everyone; right by their side no matter how little of importance it may seem to be. Such a loyal friend, awesome son to his wonderful parents and siblings, an amazing husband and father. I’m so sorry Debbie, Selby and Noah for your loss. John was one of the kindest people I know and it is killing Scott and I that we live so far away and were not able to spend as much time with him as an adult. I wish we were there for the funeral sooooo much today, as I know it will be an absolutely beautiful service for such a beautiful soul. I’m there in spirit with you all today; especially my dearest friend Reenie as the twin connection is especially hard, and I will always and forever through God’s special Graces be in spirit with John.

  • My cousin John was one of the finest men I’ve ever known. He was a true gentleman who adored his wife Debbie and his children Selby and Noah. I consider myself blessed to have had a chance to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his loved ones.
