John H. Nickle, Jr.
John H. Nickle, Jr., Ph.D., age 63, of Delaware City, DE, transitioned from this life on Friday, January 7, 2011.
A native Delawarean, Dr. Nickle was born in Wilmington on September 3, 1947, and was a 1965 graduate of Tower Hill School. He would go on to earn his bachelors degree in Chemistry from Trinity College in Hartford, CT, in 1969, and his doctorate in Physical Organic Chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1975 under Professor Harold Kwart.
He began his career as a research chemist with the Uniroyal Company in Middlebury, CT, and, in 1979, accepted a position with the DuPont Company as a research chemist in the Biochemicals Department, later as a research supervisor, and then as a Global Supply Chain Manager in the Agricultural Products Business. He enjoyed a very successful career spanning 32 years.
Active in his community, Dr. Nickle was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in Delaware City and had served as Junior Warden, Vestry Member, Eucharistic Minister, Communion Assistant, Assistant Treasurer, and Stewardship Chairperson. He was also the president of the Delaware City Cemetery Association, a member of the American Chemical Society and Phi Beta Kappa, a member of the American Legion, and a member of Delaware Greenwatch, which is involved with protecting the health of the Delaware Estuaries. Most notably, he was an environmental steward striving to protect this fragile earth, our island home. As a young man, Dr. Nickle proudly served his country in the US Army Chemical Corps attaining the rank of Captain.
He was preceded in death by his father, J. Harry Nickle. He is survived by his mother, Elva Elizabeth Megee Nickle; siblings, Elva I. Nickle, Elizabeth N. Saunders (W. Daniel), and Henry E. Nickle (Anne J.); nieces, Amy E. Rominger, Elizabeth A. Nickle, and Janet E. Saunders; and nephews, Lee D. Herzog, D. Curtis Saunders, and Scott C. Nickle.
Visitation will be held from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Friday, January 14th, at Christ Episcopal Church, 222 Clinton Street (Third and Clinton Streets), Delaware City. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 15th, at Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in Harbeson (DE) Cemetery.
