John L. LeVan

Born October 14, 1952

John L. LeVan, age 63, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Friday, February 12, 2016.

A native New Castle, Delawarean, John was born in Wilmington on October 14, 1952, and was a son of the late Paul A. LeVan, Sr. and Emma D. (Hutchison) LeVan. He made his career with American Minerals where he worked as a production foreman for 44 years until recently. Well known for his strong work ethic, John was an exceptionally dedicated employee.

He was a devoted Philadelphia sports fan and looked forward to cheering on his favorite teams each season. An avid outdoorsman, John owned several boats over the years and enjoyed fishing and crabbing. He was active in his community and gave of his time as a youth Little League coach for many years. In his leisure time, John enjoyed bowling and hanging out with his lifelong best friend and cousin, Robert. His happiest moments were spent in the company of his loved ones and he adored watching his children and grandchildren splash around the family pool. John will be remembered as a generous and caring person who always went out of his way to help anyone in need. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Lambdin. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marilyn (Stranahan) LeVan; children, John L. LeVan, Jr., Harry R. Wiest and Jodi M. Gennusa (Jeff) all of Bear, DE; brothers, Paul LeVan (Mary Ann) of Lebanon, PA and Joseph LeVan of Millsboro, DE; sisters, Maryellen Veid (Richard) of New Castle, DE and Virginia Harless of North East, MD; grandchildren, Matthew, Joshua, Delaney, Logan and Jeffrey; childhood friend, Fred Steel and many others; and a multitude of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 12 Noon. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
