Mr. John L. Scannell, Sr., known fondly as “Jack,” age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away on Saturday, April 28, 2012.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Scannell was born in Wilmington on October 22, 1921, son of the late Daniel Scannell and Myrtle Ford Scannell. He proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard during World War II, and, in civilian life, would go on to a long and successful career as a master bricklayer.

He was instrumental in the installation of the very first set of lights at the Newark High School athletic field.
Mr. Scannell was a longtime member of St. John’s-Holy Angels parish and the Newark Lions Club. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed traveling and solving challenging crossword puzzles. A devoted husband, proud father, and doting grandfather, he delighted most of all in spending time with his precious family, all of whom he cherished deeply.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosalee A. “Sue” Brown Scannell; children, Kevin D. Scannell (Jill) of Newark, John L. “Kip” Scannell, Jr. (Erika) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Karen Molina of Newark, and Virginia Kendrat (Richard) of Kunkletown, PA; brother, Daniel L. “Bud” Scannell of Chattanooga, TN; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a great great grandson; 4 step great grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharen Scannell, and a brother, Harold J. Scannell.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the phenomenal staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their many kindnesses to Mr. Scannell during this difficult time.
