John Mitchell Cael, Jr.
Mr. John Mitchell Cael, Jr., age 84, of Wilmington, DE, died on Wednesday, July 21, 2010, at the Compassionate Care Hospice Unit at St. Francis Hospital.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Cael was born in Wilmington on January 18, 1926, son of the late John M. Cael, Sr. and Irene Mae Quigley Cael. He was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School and would go on to serve his country proudly in the Merchant Marine during World War II. In civilian life, he made his career with the DuPont Company, where he was employed as a millwright at the Experimental Station and retired after 35 years of service.
A devoted family man throughout his life, Mr. Cael delighted in spending time with his beloved wife of 62 years, children, and grandchildren, and often told them interesting stories about working on his grandfathers farm in his youth. In earlier years, he was active in the DAP Pushmobile Derby, coached in the Stanton-Newport Little League, and was a member of the Indian River Water Sports Club. He also enjoyed bowling, traveling, and camping.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Clementine Theresa Billingsley Cael; devoted children, Irene Copes (William), Joanne Scholl (Bob), Margaret Fiorelli (Lou), Linda Lackford (John), John Cael III (Kimberly), and Steven Cael (Drema); brother, Joseph Quigley Cael; sister, June Cael Lewis; 16 loving grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and good friends; and his pet dog, Mickey. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Scholl.
The family extends special thanks to the nurses and staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for their many kindnesses to Mr. Cael and his family during his illness.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.
