John W. Stewart

Mr. John W. Stewart, age 77, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011, at his home.


Born in Atlantic City, NJ, on September 28, 1933, Mr. Stewart was the son of the late James C. Stewart and Marguerite Peitre Stewart. He proudly served his country for four years in the US Navy during the Korean War, receiving his honorable discharge from active duty in 1954. In civilian life, Mr. Stewart retired after a long career in the maintenance division of the Corporation Trust Company. He remained active in veterans organizations throughout his life and was a longtime member of the American Legion.


A gifted woodworker and craftsman, Mr. Stewart was a true master at using a variety of interesting tools. He maintained a large and impressive tool collectioneach tool with its own special place in his workshopand greatly enjoyed shopping for new and unique additions. He also enjoyed creating a beautiful garden around his home each year.


Most of all, Mr. Stewart will be fondly remembered as a devoted family man who delighted always in spending time with his beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren.


He is survived by his sons, Wilfred Bud Stewart (Patricia) of Middletown, DE, Anthony Tony Riccio (Patricia) of New Castle, DE, Ron Riccio (Annette) of Smithville, NJ, and Dennis Riccio (Roberta) of Bellington, WV; companion, Pauline Stewart of New Castle, DE; 16 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; siblings, Claire, Phoebe, Rhoda, Sally, and Chickie; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Helene, May, Jane, Laura, Betty, Nancy, Joseph, Wayne, and Allen.


A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, March 25th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.


In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Stewart may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
