Born October 2, 1946

Joseph A. Stackewicz, age 70, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

Born in Elizabeth, NJ on October 2, 1946, Joseph was the son of the late Anthony and Mary (Zaremba) Stackewicz. He proudly served his country for 21 years as a member the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1987 at the rank of Petty Officer, First Class. Following his military career, Joseph worked for Fisher Scientific in Glasgow, retiring after 21 years of dedicated employment. He then accepted a part time position with the Home Depot in New Castle.

A man of strong faith, Joseph was a very involved and active member of Hope Lutheran Church in New Castle. He gave of his time as a member of the Delaware City Volunteer Fire Company. In his leisure time, Joseph enjoyed woodworking, completing craft projects, and gardening. He was an avid sports fan and looked forward to cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Penn State Nittany Lions Football team and their marching band each season. Joseph will be remembered for his love of the Lord, his family, and his canine companions, Abby, Gracie, and Bailey. He was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and dear friend who will be greatly missed.

Joseph is survived by his wife of 14 years, Virginia (Garrahan) Stackewicz; children, Ann Bello (Steven) of Elkton, MD, Tricia Stackewicz of New Castle, Sherry Stackewicz (David Wertz) of New Castle, and Justin J. McGowan (Misti) of Huntingtown, MD; brother, Anthony Stackewicz of Greensburg, PA; former wife, Patricia Stackewicz of Delaware City; grandchildren, Justin Stackewicz, Justin McGowan II, Taylor McGowan, Tyler Wertz, Sierra Wertz, and Samantha Bello; and many extended family members and wonderful friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening, October 4, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A second visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 am until 12:00 Noon on Thursday, October 5, 2017, where a funeral service will follow at 12:00 Noon. A committal service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday morning, October 9, 2017, in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE, where interment will follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joseph’s memory may be made to the SPCA, 455 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713 or to the Hope Lutheran Church, 230 Christiana Rd, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • When I met Joe he was so excited to know that we were both of the Polish heritage and we became close to where I called him my other Polish Pop. His laughter and smile were contagious and even after 30 yrs of knowing Joe he would always greet me with a warm hug and a kiss on the cheek.
