Joseph A. Traurig, age 81, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 27, 2016 of congestive heart failure.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on June 14, 1934, Mr. Traurig was a son of the late Adolph and Ann (Murphy) Traurig. He was raised in Elkton, MD and moved to Newark in 1960. A proud veteran, Mr. Traurig served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force from 1955 until 1959. He made his career as a quality control engineer at the DuPont Company’s Glasgow site until his retirement.

A passionate baseball enthusiast, Mr. Traurig played for a number of years in his youth and enjoyed cheering on his favorite team, the Baltimore Orioles. He was also an avid supporter of the Baltimore Ravens. A man of strong faith, Mr. Traurig was a longtime parishioner of Holy Family Church in Newark. He was a devoted and loving family man who adored his wife, beloved daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Traurig was preceded in death by his son in law, Stephen LeJeune and grandson, Owen Pierce. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine Carol (Toy) Traurig; daughters, Ann Marie Hobbs (Jim), Susan Traurig, Catherine LeJeune, Lisa Edwards, Linda Musser (Ken) and Joanna Pierce; brother, Bob Traurig; grandchildren, Joey Hobbs (Cortney), Tara Haugen (Jay), Daniel Hobbs, Nicole LeJeune, Stephen LeJeune (Rebecca), Stephanie Edwards, Ben Edwards, Natalie Edwards, Sean Musser, Lauren Pierce and Sophie Pierce; and 4 great grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Thursday morning, June 2, 2016, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), P.O. Box 62596, Baltimore, MD 21264-2596.

  • When Joey(Joe) moved from Philadelphia to Elkton we were neighbors, we were about 6 years old. So I have known him and the whole family for a long time.
    Joe was a great classmate and a wonderful family man. Our Elkton High Class of 1952 will miss him.
