Joseph J. Calhoun, Sr.

Mr. Joseph J. Calhoun, Sr., age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2010, at his home.


A native Delawarean, Mr. Calhoun was born in Wilmington on November 14, 1920, son of the late Francis and May (Taylor) Calhoun. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater. Following his honorable discharge from military service, he first worked for the DuPont Company and would later accept a position with the US Postal Service, where he worked for 37 years before retiring as a letter carrier from the Wilmington office in 1982. During his career, he was honored with two Distinguished Carrier Awards. Following his retirement, he was employed as a delivery driver with the former Hilamans Flowers in Elsmere for 20 years.


Active in his community, Mr. Calhoun was a longtime member and past president of the Penn Acres Civic Association. He was a devout Catholic and had been a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church for 60 years.


He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Pauline Nickerson Calhoun; son, Joseph J. Calhoun, Jr. (Cynthia) of Richmond, VA; daughter, Janet C. Hammond (Robert) of Hockessin, DE; grandchildren, Jonathan Hammond (Mary Beth) of Newark, DE, Joseph Calhoun III (Becky) of Richmond, VA, and Stephanie Calhoun of Richmond, VA; great grandson, Jonathan Hammond, Jr.; and sisters, Catherine Garst of New Castle, DE, and Anne Craighton (Leroy) of New Castle, DE. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Calhoun, brother, Francis Calhoun, grandson, Michael Calhoun, and brother-in-law, Charles Garst.


Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, 19720, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.


In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Calhoun may be made to the Our Lady of Fatima Maintenance Fund at the address above or to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720.
