Joseph J. Witkowski, known fondly as Rusty, age 83, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Tuesday, June 9, 2015.

A lifelong Delawarean, Rusty was born in Wilmington on May 25, 1932, and was the son of the late Walter W. Witkowski and Rose M. (Chorzelewski) Witkowski. He was a career sheet metal worker and a member of Workers International Association Local 19 in Elsmere. Rusty retired after many years of dedicated service to his craft.

A devout Catholic, he was a longtime parishioner of St. Matthews R.C. Church. Rusty played both baseball and basketball in his youth and was an avid Phillies fan. In his leisure time, he enjoyed duck hunting, fishing and crabbing. Rusty will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by many nieces and nephews including, Sue Zebley (Phil) of Wilmington, Tom Witkowski of Bear, Walt Sczubelek (Kathy) of Wilmington, Danny Zebley of Newark, Ashley Zebley of Wilmington and Brittany Witkowski of Newark; and sisters, Jeannie Steen of Wilmington and Eleanor Walker of Tampa, FL.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Friday morning, June 12, 2015, at St. Matthew’s R.C. Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Woodcrest, Wilmington, DE, where family and friends may visit from 9:30 am until 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Second Floor, Newark, DE 19711.
