Joseph Philip Mareno, age 83, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 13, 1931, Joseph was the son of the late Frank Mareno and Antoinette DeThomas Mareno. He was a career electrician serving with the IBEW and retired after many years of dedicated service.

Active in his community, Joseph served as a past president for the Wilmington Manor Lions Club. He also gave of his time and talents as a volunteer for the Mancus Foundation and with Special Olympics of Delaware. In his leisure time, he enjoyed visiting the beach, fishing and traveling. A devoted and loving husband, Joseph shared 58 years of marriage with his beloved wife, best friend and partner in life, Rita. He was happiest in the company of his family and adored spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Marzi and a sister, Catherine Gliniak. Joseph is survived by his wife, Rita M. DiFabrizio Mareno; children, Joseph Mareno (Marguerite) of Newark, Julia A. Mareno of New Castle, Joan C. Mareno (Kristin) of National Park, NJ and Mario W. Mareno (Lisa Savage) of Middletown; sisters, Honey Manahan (Ronald) and Dorothy Holland (William); 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday afternoon, September 3, 2014, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 1 pm. Interment will be held privately.

  • I will miss you Uncle Joe, i’m so happy we got back together again. I remember all the jokes you would tell us, I like the one about the cream fill donuts, just so we wouldn’t eat them you would make a smart remark about the cream coming out , and when we would make a face you would laugh and eat the donut. Although years have passed since we were together, when I last saw you guys at my Mom’s services Joe flashed that smile of his and pleasant memories came back that were of great comfort during that difficult time.
