Joseph Randy Stretch Scalia
Mr. Joseph (Randy / Stretch) Scalia, age 55, of New Castle, DE, died suddenly on Thursday, January 20, 2011 in Tampa, FL.
Randy was born in Wilmington on September 20, 1955, son of the late Joseph L. Scalia and Mary J. Blackburn Scalia. He proudly served his country in the US Marine Corps and later in the Delaware National Guard. He made his career in used automobile sales and in cable TV.
Randy lived his life as a free spirit. Never knowing where he would turn up next, the early morning of July 30th found him where he was most needed. On Moores Lane, a house caught fire and, with the help of neighbors, he climbed barefoot up a two story aluminum ladder to attempt to reach a third story window, where a young mother and her little girl shouted for help. He stood at the top of the ladder–his body pressed against the house, arm raised–and instructed the mother to lower the little girl down. The brave child held onto Randys neck as he climbed back down the ladder. Although he and the other rescuers were honored by the Goodwill Fire Department, the Town of New Castle, and the Delaware Volunteer Firemens Association, Randy just couldnt understand all the attention for what he thought was something anybody would do, given the same circumstance.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph P. Scalia of Bear and Christopher M. Scalia of Newark; brothers, Michael Scalia of Bear and Steven Scalia of New Castle; sister, Joanne Foxwell of New Castle; and grandchildren, Andraya, Christopher Jr., Gianni, and Jo Jo. He was preceded in death by his beloved nephew, Michael (Pickles) Scalia.
A committal service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, January 28, 2011, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear. A reception will follow at 3 pm at the St. Anthonys Club, 1017 Gray Street, New Castle.
