Joseph Russell Maxwell, Sr.
Joseph Russell Maxwell, Sr. died peacefully June 29, 2010.
Born November 30, 1917, Joe lived a full and fulfilling life. A 1935 Newark High School graduate, Joe became his class valedictorian, served as class president, and captained the 34 Yellow Jackets football team. A 1940 graduate of the University of Delaware in civil engineering, Joe began his working career with the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. before moving to the Philadelphia Electric Co., where he worked for thirty-two years. He was a professional engineer and a member of many engineering societies and associations. Joe was an accomplished musician, working his way through college playing in numerous local orchestras as well as two summers as the Delaware Park bugler. He maintained a musical interest throughout his life as a frequent visitor to the Philadelphia Orchestra and Wilmingtons Grand Opera House. Joe reached Grand Master status in his second love, duplicate bridge.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, James Hamilton and Lillian Morris Maxwell, his brother Paul, and his lifelong and loving wife of sixty-eight years, Betty. He is survived by two sons, James H. Maxwell, Ph.D. and Joseph R. Maxwell, Jr., daughters-in-law, Valerie and Kirsten, five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
