Josephine B. Griffiths, age 93, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her family on Thursday, October 29, 2015.

Born in Scranton, PA on November 12, 1921, Josephine was the daughter of the late Stephen Barnic and Sophie (Douglas) Barnic. She was a talented homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her beloved family. Josephine gave of her time often when her children were young by serving with the PTA and as a Girl Scout leader. She was an avid crafter and gifted seamstress. A loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, Josephine will be dearly missed by all.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Griffiths; daughter, Stephanie Gregg; brother, Stephen Barnic; and son-in-law, Rodger Schaen. Josephine is survived by her children, Barry Griffiths (Mary Ann), Stan Griffiths (Karen), Cindy Dodge (Michael), Ruth Schaen and Jan Desmond (Martin); 9 grandchildren, including Jessi, who lovingly cared for her grandmother during her illness; and 3 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday evening, November 2, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A committal service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, November 3, 2015 in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Josephine’s memory may be sent to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.

  • Ministering to Josephine has been an extreme pleasure. Bringing Eucharist was a true Joy. During my visits, I came to know Josephine as a wonderful lady who seemed very close to our Loving God. She loved her family dearly and I admire the attention, care and love provided. Many fond memories have been formed and cherished for all time.
