Mrs. Judith A. Judy Hughes, age 81, of Newark, DE, died quietly at Foulk Manor South on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, after a long illness.

Judy was born in Chester, PA on July 27, 1936. She attended Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA. After marrying John Jack Hughes in 1957, they moved together to Newark in 1958. Judy and Jack shared a great interest in music throughout their lives and, in 1979, co-founded Disc Tec, a company that provided music for ballroom dance competitions around the country. Their music program earned the respect of many performers, promoters and fans in the dance industry. Judy was a cantor at Holy Family Catholic Church in Newark, DE for over 25 years.

Judy lovingly cared for her husband, Jack, who passed away from a long illness in 2006 on the day of their 49th wedding anniversary. She is survived by 3 children, Dianne Schieffer and husband, Kenneth, of Bear, DE, Tina Farr and husband, Joseph, of Newark, DE and Mark Hughes and wife, Katie, of Newark, DE; 9 grandchildren; brother-in-law, Fred Hughes and wife, Norma, of Landenberg, PA; and sister-in-law, Ruth Hughes of Hellertown, PA. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Joy and Mary Somers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Holy Family R.C. Church, 15 Gender Rd, Newark, DE, 19713. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Judy’s name to Holy Family R.C. Church at the address listed above.

  • Judy was a wonderful person and an excellent cantor at Holy Family Church. I worked with her for many happy years as the music director. I will miss her laugh and her smile very much. I know she and Jack are together now providing beautiful music for the angels to dance to. God Bless you Judy! Thank you for sharing your time and your beautiful voice with Holy Family Church. Thank you for being a good friend and such a truly wonderful and amazing person. Rest in peace.
