Kathryn L. Altice, known affectionately as “Aunt Kathryn”, age 96, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at home, on Friday, November 29, 2013.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware, she was raised in Virginia, but lived most of her life in New Castle, DE.
Kathryn was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church in Wilmington, where she was a volunteer in the church’s nursery and Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed going out to dinner, needlework and tending to her garden, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her closest and dearest friend of more than 60 years, Doris Freebery, and the 4 Freebery children, to whom she was a second mother, George (Sharon), Stephen (Diane), Kani Brams (Jon), and Andi Stansky (Greg); their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren; nephews, Ron Martin (Sharon) and Tom Martin; nieces, Sara Johnson (Leon) and Joyce Sheridan, and their families.
The family wishes to thank Companion Hearts LLC, the home health agency that provided wonderful care for Aunt Kathryn at the end of her life, especially Maureen, Regina, Janie, and Tracy. The family also wishes to thank Liz and Janine of Compassionate Care Hospice for their excellent care.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at the Bethany Baptist Church, 410 Denver Road, Wilmington, DE, 19804, where friends may call from 9 am until 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

4 Condolences for Kathryn L. Altice “Aunt Kathryn”

  • As one of the many nieces and nephews of Aunt Kathryn Altice I express condolences to the family and beloved friends who have been Kathryn’s family in Delaware these many years. Kathryn has been special to us all our lives. We cherish memories of love and caring shared by Kathryn and Skippy during their extensive travels. They were welcomed guests at Altice family reunions and dearly loved by all.

You will always be in our hearts, Dear Kathryn. Rest in Peace.

  • We love you and miss you already Joyce “Billie” Sheridan (VA) and daughter, Lynne Proffitt (TX)

  • Aunt Kathryn, it saddens me to hear of the news but know that you were loved more than you even realize. No Freebery event will ever be the same. You were surely a part of the family and one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met. We miss you!

  • Aunt Kathryn lived next door to my Great-Grandmother Doris Freebery for as long as I can remember. She never missed one birthday, one Christmas, one Easter or Thanksgiving. Tatty was one of the sweetest, caring and loving person I have ever known. My family is truly blessed to have been so lucky to have her be part of our lives for as long as we did. I will never forget my memories as a child running around the back yard in the sprinkler or climbing the apple tree or playing colored eggs. It’s hard to believe my visits at Aunt Kathryn’s are now just a memory. I love you Tatty and I miss you and thank you for being such a wonderful friend to my Grandmother.
