April 28, 1923 – February 6, 2015

Laura M. Thompson , age 91, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 6, 2015 with her family by her side.

Laura was born in New Jersey on April 28, 1923, and was the daughter of the late Dr. John J. Smarkola and Marie C. (Macluchenko) Smarkola. She was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Medicine where she served as a registered nurse in the cadet corp. Laura later worked as a government supervisor for the Signal Corp during WWII and did research work at Wistar Institute. She spent 10 years with the Colonial School District as a teacher’s aide at the Wallace Wallin School.

A gifted singer, Laura was a member of the Madrigal Singers of Wilmington, a 25 year member of the Christ Church Choir in Greenville, DE, the Cantata Choir of Wilmington and the Brandywiners. In her leisure time, she enjoyed traveling with family, knitting, sewing and making and collecting crafts. Laura will be remembered by all for her kind and loving personality and her generous spirit.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred A. Thompson, a son, Geoffrey Thompson and 3 brothers, George, John and Harold Smarkola. Laura is survived by her children, Michael Thompson (Phyllis), Christopher Thompson (Diane) and Susan Moak; 4 grandchildren, Melinda Blohm (Jason), Christopher Thompson, Jr. (Carly), Ian Moak and Michael Moak; 1 great grandson, Trevor Blohm; and her extended family at Manor Care of Pike Creek.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 on Thursday evening, February 12, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Manor Care of Pike Creek, 5651 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.

  • We were sorry to hear the passing of Mrs. Thompson. So sorry we could not attend the services. We have fond memories of Mrs. Thompson at all of the Manor Fire Company softball games. Her peanut butter fudge was the best and we have her recipe card that she gave us. She will be missed. Please accept our condolences to the entire Thompson Family.
