Leona C. Schwetz, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 24, 2013.
Born in Shenandoah, PA on July 25, 1926, Mrs. Schwetz was a daughter of the late Anthony Petusky and Mary Paulabinsky Petusky. She attended J.W. Cooper High School in Shenandoah, graduating in 1944, and then went on to serve in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during WWII. Mrs. Schwetz later attended the Pottsville School of Nursing, graduating as a registered nurse in 1947. Following her graduation, she worked at the original Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
An avid reader and academic, Mrs. Schwetz possessed a deep love of learning which she happily shared with others. Kind hearted and gentle in nature, she was an exceptional mother and caregiver. She will be dearly missed by all.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard S. Schwetz, who passed away in 2002, and her sister, Elizabeth Balschi. She is survived by her daughter, Marian A. March and husband Adrien of Boca Raton, FL; cousins, Ruth Hentz of Bridgewater, NJ, Albert Paulbinsky of Wyncote, PA, and Rose Ann Markunas of Shenandoah, PA; nephews, James Balschi of Hopkinton, MA and Joel Hentz of Bridgewater, NJ; nieces, Judith Jaeger of Charlottsville, VA and Beth Balschi of Guilford, CT; endearing friends, Peggy Twardzik of Schnecksville, PA and Lydia Allie of Harrison Twp, MI; and her beloved, Molly.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Kathir Suppiah and the staff of Compassionate Care Hospice for the excellent care given to Mrs. Schwetz during her illness.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may call from 9 am until 10 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Schwetz’s memory may be made to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Foundation, Lockbox #1352, P.O. Box 8500, Philadelphia, PA 19178-1352.

  • Struggled for days to find words of comfort. But all I can say is, I will miss her very much but she will always be in my heart . She was a wonderfull person and surrounded herself with a family that took excellant care of her. God bless you Marion and Adrian for putting your life on hold to make hers the best it could have been. We are so blessed to have spent time in our lifes to know her, and she has made so many memroires in our life that will always bring joy to our heart and a smile to our face. She will always be remembered as mom as she was so much mom to me.
