Leslie George Eklund, Jr.
Mr. Leslie Les George Eklund, Jr., age 65, of Newark, DE, died on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.
Born in Wilmington on June 15, 1945, son of the late Leslie George Eklund, Sr. and Virginia Juanita Leasure Eklund, Mr. Eklund was a 1963 graduate of Newark High School. He would go on to make his career at the University of Delaware, where he was employed in the maintenance department for 40 years until his retirement in 2007.
A lifelong resident of Newark, Les was a Life Member of the Aetna Hose, Hook, and Ladder Fire Company. He was a great fan of UD varsity football throughout his life and often told interesting stories of riding the team bus in the 1950s and being given the affectionate nickname of Whitey by the players. He was also devoted to animals, particularly his special pet dog and companion, Lucy.
His beloved wife, Judith Faye Plotts Eklund, died on January 23rd of this year. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Eklund and Erica Sorrentino (Ralph); stepdaughters, Katie Edsall (Lane) and Karin Vickers (Mark); sister, Kay Gordon (Bruce); brother, Ronald Eklund (Patricia); 6 step grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held from 10 am to 12 Noon on Saturday, July 31, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. Burial will be held privately.
