Lt Cmdr. William H. Greve (USN, Ret.)
Lt. Cmdr. William H. Bill Greve (USN, Ret.), age 80, of Newark, DE, died on Sunday, March 6, 2011, at his home from pancreatic cancer.
Born in Baltimore, MD, on July 24, 1930, Bill was the son of the late Mildred D. McCurdy and Harry C. Greve.
Bill was very proud of his military service, which spanned from 1947 to 1970. His naval career included an overseas tour in Morocco, recruiting duties in Baltimore, tours aboard the USS Alcona and the USS Albany, a guided missile cruiser, which he helped commission, and service in Bainbridge, MD. Bill completed his military career in Washington D.C.
Following his military career, he began a second career with the State of Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, where he retired as the personnel administrator in 1990. While in state service, he obtained his bachelors degree in business administration from Wilmington College, graduating summa cum laude in 1979.
Bill especially enjoyed spending time with family, internet ancestry research, watching old movies and the Military History channel, taking long drives, dining out, listening to music, and a Maryland crab cake with a cold beer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothea Starkey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marie A. Piazzie Greve, and his children, Kathlene M. Brittingham and husband Wayne of Landenberg, PA; Marie A. Krauss and husband John of Wilmington, DE; William R. Greve of Newark, DE; Donna M. Perrotti and husband Guy of Newark, DE; Robert L. Greve and wife Mary of Newark, DE; and Thomas E. Greve and wife Kimela of Hartly, DE. He is also survived by his sister, Brenda Kimball of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Rochelle M. Brittingham and husband Nicholas Santella, Cori L. Brittingham, Alissa M. Brittingham, Jenna M. Krauss, Gabrielle M. Perrotti, Jessica Hayes and husband Jason, Dawn Bennett, William Bennett, and Thomas E. Greve, Jr.; great granddaughter, Juliette M. Santella, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give thanks and appreciation for the care provided by the general surgical oncologist, Dr. Joseph Bennett, and to Dr. Jamal Misleh, Jodie, and Tammy of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, March 11th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, March 12th, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
