Born:
Died: 3/29/2010

Luvenia Mary Beausang, age 95, of Hockessin, DE, died following a brief illness on Monday, March 29, 2010, at Wilmington Hospital.

Mrs. Beausang was born in Lebanon, IN, on January 9, 1915, daughter of the late James Bramblett and Nancy Mary Denney Bramblett. A graduate of Purdue University, she received her bachelors degree in dietetics in 1937 and began her career as a dietician in the Veterans Affairs hospital system. After working for a number of years in veterans hospitals in San Antonio, New Orleans, and Indianapolis, Mrs. Beausang married and moved to New Castle, where she enjoyed raising her family. During her years as a full-time homemaker, she also served as a substitute teacher in the New Castle school system. In 1965, she returned to her professional career and accepted a position as a dietician with Tower Hill School in Wilmington.

Following her retirement from Tower Hill in 1980, she greatly enjoyed volunteering extensively in both the libraries and classrooms of the Colonial School District. She had a great passion for nature throughout her life, and, after moving to Hockessin in 1990, worked as a volunteer at the Ashland Nature Center. Her lifelong commitment to physical fitness and good health also led her to volunteer for many years at Christiana Hospital.

Mrs. Beausang was a founding member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, and, more recently, a member of Newark United Methodist Church. She was active in the womens society of both churches, as well as in many other church ministries.

With her husband, Mrs. Beausang enjoyed traveling and had visited many interesting destinations across the United States, including favorite vacation spots in Stone Harbor, NJ, Wellsboro, PA, and Sugar Bush, VT. Together, they particularly enjoyed walking, bird watching, and trips to the shore. She was a gifted seamstress, as well, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, embroidery, needlepoint, and crewel.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John F. Beausang, in 1989, and by a grandson, William J. Merkel III, in 2007. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy J. Meade of Newark; Carolyn A. Merkel of Hockessin; Joan M. Rubens (Josef) of Newark; and Barbara L. Lawson (James) of Cochranville, PA; grandchildren, Shannon N. Meade Oehlers (Michael), Jonathan M. Meade (Adrienne), James A. Lawson IV (fiance, Valerie Schuster), Kaitrin A. Lawson, and Amy E. Rubens.

Visitation will be held from 10:15 am to 11:15 am on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. A funeral service will follow at 11:30 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, First State Chapter, 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, DE 19801; or to the Newark United Methodist Church at the address above.
