Margaret Hammond (Sutton) Burris, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 5, 2015.

A lifelong Delawarean, Margaret was born in Wilmington on December 14, 1924, and was a daughter of the late John Francis Sutton and Gertrude (Phillips) Sutton. She was a talented homemaker who devoted her life to caring for her family.

A devout Catholic, Margaret was a longtime parishioner of Holy Spirit R.C. Church, where she was a member of the solidarity club. She was an exceptional cook and delighted in baking delicious desserts for her loved ones. A creative and artistic individual, Margaret enjoyed crafting, ceramics and decorative wood painting in her leisure time. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother who adored spending time with her family, especially at the beach. Margaret will be very dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Clifton L. Burris; sisters, Susanne Burris and Mary Godwin; and brother, Thomas Sutton. Margaret is survived by her sons, William W. Burris (Pamela) of New Castle, DE and Clifton L. Burris, Jr. of Middletown, DE; granddaughters, Stephanie E. Burris of New Castle, DE and Danielle N. Arnold (John) of Wilmington, DE; and great grandchildren, Ava, Julian, Lucas, Alycia and Samuel.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Wednesday evening, November 11, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Services and interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Margaret’s memory may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 248 E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713.
