Marie Bessey

Born September 2, 1933

Marie Bessey, age 80, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 27, 2014.

Born in Brooklyn, New York on September 2, 1933, Marie was a daughter of the late Joseph Cantasano and Mary De Lia Cantasano. She was employed as a teacher’s aide with the Christiana School District and retired after years of dedicated service to the many students whose lives she touched.

Marie was a founding member and longtime parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, where she was an active volunteer with the church’s chapter of the Knights of Columbus. In her leisure time, Marie enjoyed traveling with her beloved husband, Herbert and playing mahjong each week with her girlfriends. A devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, she adored cooking weekly Sunday dinners. Marie cherished time spent with her family and friends, especially her precious grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, JoAnne Cantasano. Marie is survived by her husband of 51 years, Herbert J. Bessey; daughters, Janet Ponchak and husband Al of Middletown, DE, Rosemary Press and husband Pat of Bear, DE and Kathleen McGarry and Shaun of Newark, DE; brother, Frank Cantasano and wife Josephine of Monroe, NJ; 7 grandchildren, Justin (Sonia), Tyler, Kyle, Colin, Abigail, Zachary and Owen; and 2 great grandchildren, Peyton and Landyn.

A visitation will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Thursday evening, May 1, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Friday morning, May 2, 2014, at the Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Second Floor, Newark, DE 19711.

    I have known and worked with Marie for many years. We have been friends and she would always stop by my house when she saw me working in yard. She was always a friendly, loving person even when she learned about her health problem. She was amazing to me that she had a great attitude even though she was going through so much. I know all the years that I have know Marie she seemed to enjoy life to the fullest. We often talked about our grandkids. She enjoyed you all very much and we will all miss her.
