Martha V. Lester-Hall

Born April 30, 1922

Martha V. Lester-Hall, age 92, of Middletown, DE and formerly of Delaware City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 9, 2014.

Born in Panama, on April 30, 1922, Martha was a daughter of the late Capt. Oakley Vineyard and Nellie Long Vineyard. She worked as an executive secretary for the DuPont Company before settling down to raise her family.

She met the love of her life, Elbert Lester at Fort DuPont where he was serving during the war. The couple moved many times during his tenure with the US Forest Service. Following Elbert’s death in 1961, Martha returned to Delaware City to live. In 1982, she married Col. Clifford E. Hall, Jr. and together, the couple moved to Middletown.

Martha was a longtime and active member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Delaware City, where she sang in the choir. She enjoyed playing bridge, completing crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. Martha loved traveling and the many happy memories she made while doing so. She was a loving and supportive mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her first husband, Elbert J. Lester, Jr. and her second husband, Clifford E. Hall, Jr., and her sisters, Helen Vineyard Schroeder and Elizabeth Vineyard Kaline. She is survived by her daughter, Faye L. Russell and husband Howard of Townsend; granddaughter, Devon Amanda Johnston; and grandson, Gabriel Feldman.

A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church of Delaware City, 309 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will be private in Old Drawyers Cemetery, Odessa, Delaware.

    Please allow me to offer my condolences and those of my family. I grew to love your Mother from my many visits to see my Uncle Cliff. She was a true lady and I enjoyed her very much. We lost my Mother three years ago this November; I understand how you feel about the emotion catching you off guard; it happens to me still.
    I am glad to hear she went peacefully…I am sure she and Gail will have much to discuss:)
