Mary E. OâNeill
Mrs. Mary E. (Kelly) ONeill, age 92, of Millcroft in Newark, DE, formerly of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 3, 2010, at Christiana Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, on August 5, 1918, Mrs. ONeill was the daughter of the late John Joseph Kelly and Elizabeth Killgallon Kelly. She was a graduate of the famed John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Philadelphia and began her career with the American Red Cross. She later worked as a senior bookkeeper for the Salvation Army before accepting a position in the accounting department of PNC Banks corporate trust division. She retired in 1979.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mrs. ONeill was a dedicated member of Our Lady of Fatima parish, serving as a past president and past treasurer of the BVM Sodality, a Eucharistic Minister, and a Minister to the Sick. She was active, as well, in the Leisure Club, the Christian Formation Committee, and the Diocesan Mothers Guild, where she was also a past president. For her many years of exemplary service in the local Catholic community, she was honored with the Diocese of Wilmingtons Order of Merit.
Mrs. ONeill was a longtime member and past treasurer of the New Castle Kiwanis Club. She was supportive of her husbands military career throughout their marriage and remained active in the Ladies Auxiliary of the US Naval Fleet Reserve for many years.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Francis J. Mike ONeill, a son, John J. Jack ONeill, and a son-in-law, William J. Corrigan, Jr. She is survived by her children, Francis J. Mike ONeill, Jr. (Carol) of New Castle, Maureen E. Freebery (James J.) of Wilmington, Margaret M. Peggy DeDonato (Karl) of Wilmington, Susanne M. Travis (Thomas) of Wilmington, Joseph P. ONeill (Mary) of Annapolis, MD, and Arlene J. Corrigan of Newark; daughter-in-law, Eileen ONeill of Rehoboth Beach, DE; sister, Margaret Peggie Nolan of Warminster, PA; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 Noon on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 9 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
