Mary H. Watkins
Mrs. Mary H. Watkins, age 81, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, September 16, 2010, at her home.
Mrs. Watkins was born in Orwigsburg, PA, on December 15, 1928, daughter of the late John Haeseler and Faye DeWald Haeseler. A gifted student, she was the valedictorian of her graduating class at Orwigsburg High School. She would go on to earn her bachelors degree from Penn State University and made her career as a professional dietician before leaving to raise her family.
Active in her community, Mrs. Watkins was a longtime member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Well known by all for her generous, caring, and compassionate nature, she also did extensive volunteer work at both her church and at Luther Towers. She remained an avid sports fan throughout her life and particularly enjoyed cheering for her alma mater, Penn State, as well as the Phillies.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ralph W. Meier, sons, David Meier and Charles Watkins, daughter-in-law, Tammy Watkins, and brother, John Haeseler. She is survived by her beloved husband of 33 years, John J. Watkins, Sr., whom she met 34 years ago in Post Cana; her children, John Watkins, Jr., Ralph Meier (Katharine), Robert Watkins, Daniel Meier (Nancy), Marguerite Gott (Mark), Stanley Meier (Jane), Nicholas Watkins, and Jennifer Meier; sister, Sally Miller (Jim); sister-in-law, Ruth Haeseler; grandchildren, Tyler, Bianca, Caleb, Kiana, Jonathan, Danielle, Mary Frances, Sarah, Jeremy, Lauren, Lindsey, and Joshua; nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, September 19, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, September 20, 2010, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE, where a second visitation will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will be in Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark, DE.
