Mary I. Pierce
Mrs. Mary I. Malandruccolo Pierce, age 77, of Kirkwood, DE, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2011, at Christiana Hospital.
Born during a hurricane in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, on July 30, 1933, Mrs. Pierce was the daughter of the late Thomas A. Malandruccolo and Maude Pierce Malandruccolo. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Delaware and later attended Delaware City School. She would go on to make her career as an LPN and charge attendant at the Governor Bacon Health Center in Delaware City, working there for 38 1/2 years before her retirement in 1990.
A devout Catholic throughout her life, Mrs. Pierce was a lifelong member of St. Pauls parish in Delaware City, where she received her baptism, made her first reconciliation and holy communion, and was confirmed. She was married in Elkton, MD, on August 18, 1948, and soon thereafter renewed her vows at St. Pauls.
Mrs. Pierces great passion was her love for animals. She gladly fed every stray that came to her door and tenderly nursed sick animals back to health. She was also a member of many animal rights organizations including SPCA International, Delaware Humane Association, Friends of Animals, HSUS, ASPCA, and North Shore Animal League.
Active in her community, she was a life member of the Delaware City Recreation Club.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, Robert L. Pierce, Sr.; son, Robert L. Pierce, Jr. and wife, Patti, of Bear; daughter, Melissa R. Byrd Fisher of Bedford, PA; nine grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Rosemary Nastasuk; and close family friend, Dorothy A. Pierce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Thomas A. Pierce, Sr., daughter, Julia P. Byrd, grandson, Raymond M. Byrd, and brothers, John, Joseph, and Thomas Malandruccolo. She was also predeceased by her loving friend and loyal companion, Mexi Rose, who will be buried with her.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:30 am on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am at St. Pauls R.C. Church, 209 Washington Street, Delaware City. Interment will be in New St. Pauls Cemetery.
