Matena Spartales Kalmer
Matena Spartales Kalmer, age 96, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Boston, MA, died early Sunday morning, September 26, 2010.
Born to John and Mary Spartales, who emigrated from Greece, she was one of five children. Matena graduated from Brighton High School in 1930. She worked for the Rexall Drug Company in Boston until she married Hercules Kalmer in 1946, and moved to Wilmington, where he owned the New York Restaurant. She belonged to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and was a longstanding member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. As a homemaker, her domain was in the kitchen, where patience nurtured excellence that was enjoyed by many.
Matena was preceded in death by her husband, Hercules. She is survived by her sons, Michael, his wife Susan, and stepdaughter Elise Sahadevan of Wilmington, and John of Newark.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, October 6th at the Archangels Greek Orthodox Church, 25 Bigelow Avenue, Watertown, MA. Burial will follow at Mt Auburn Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington.
